The H&S Diagnostic
Lifting the bonnet: Why Havio's Health & Safety Diagnostic is often the smartest starting point
Our H&S Diagnostic tells you more than any standard H&S Management Audit or Gap Analysis ever will.
Here’s how it works
With your permission and full discretion, you plug your business into us, and we give you a clear, honest read on where things actually stand – grounded, realistic, and always solution-focused.
It’s built for leaders who want to build stronger businesses but feel something’s off.
You might be wasting time or money fixing the wrong things.
What you need is clarity on where to focus, whether that’s leadership, systems, roles, structure, miscommunication, or a culture that’s drifted.
That’s where Jack Rumbol, Havio’s founder, steps in. He delivers this service personally.
With 20+ years of hands-on construction experience from site to boardroom, Jack doesn’t run through a checklist. He gets right under the bonnet.
Under the surface
We all know construction can be messy. Fast-moving. Unforgiving.
You might have added new people, taken on bigger projects, or stepped into a new sector.
On paper, everything looks fine. The right forms are in place and the boxes are ticked.
But the gears aren’t turning smoothly.
Sites are reactive. Decisions drag. Projects stall.
That’s when the H&S Diagnostic really earns its keep.
It’s for leaders who:
- Are honest enough to admit they don’t have all the answers
- Want to future-proof the business, not just pass the next audit
- Are willing to hear the truth, even if it stings
And it helps you:
- Prioritise time and money where it matters
- Plan for the long term instead of constant firefighting
- Spot problems early, before they spiral
Jack Rumbol, Founder & MD of Havio
“Let’s get ready to Rumbol!”
Recently Jack has carried out in-depth H&S Diagnostics for all sorts of clients – from high-end residential main contractors, to a major London Museum, to a modular bridge installer.
Different sectors and different pressures but one common thread: they all knew something wasn’t quite right but couldn’t put their finger on it.
Jack brings experience, sharp instinct, and a deep understanding of how people and processes really work in construction.
Importantly, Jack doesn’t just complete the H&S Diagnostic service as a paperwork exercise.
He’s got an intuitive ability to zero in on where things aren’t exactly clicking.
He always starts by asking the right questions and listening well, revealing the disconnects that others miss.
It’s real insight and it draws on his ability to read the room (and in-between the lines).
He’ll observe, spotting the tension in a meeting, the misalignment on site, even the moment someone hesitates before answering a question.
This intuition is backed by careful fact finding. He’ll talk to your team, at every level and review your systems, processes, and paperwork.
That mix of structured investigation and unerring gut feel is what makes Jack an exceptional pattern-spotter and problem solver.
Once he’s found what’s out of kilter, he’ll show you why, and where to start fixing it.
The process
-
1. Scope the challenge
You’ll sit down with Jack to work out what’s driving the request.
A new sector? Growing pains? H&S standards not translating from boardroom to site? Whatever it is, he gets clear on what matters to you.
-
2. Look at what’s real
Jack dives into the documents, interviews key people, walks your sites and listens in meetings. He watches how things actually operate, not just what’s in the manuals.
If you’re already a Havio client and using Altitude, he’ll use it to help spot deeper underlying patterns and trends.
-
3. Spot the blind spots
Jack isn’t on a hunt for minor non-conformities and nit-picking. It’s about identifying gaps with real consequences, things like role confusion, site coordination failures, or cultural disconnects between management and boots on the ground.
Things you’re less likely to see yourself, as you’re too close to it every day.
-
4. Focus on what matters
You’ll get a set of findings, but more importantly, a view on what’s worth fixing now, what needs a plan, and what can wait.
It’s always risk-based, realistic, and rooted in the reality of your operations.
-
5. Build a smarter way forward
Jack delivers a clear, practical roadmap, fully tailored, nothing off-the-shelf.
It gives you clarity on priorities, and options for how to improve systems, structure, culture, or leadership involvement.
Strategic sessions and follow-ups are part of the process: we stay the course with you.
A bit of prep goes a long way. GETTING READY FOR YOUR DIAGNOSTIC
Here’s what helps the process run smoothly and makes sure you get real value out of it:
What to do:
-
Explain to your team why you’re doing this.
And let’s be clear: it’s not about blame. We’re not the HSE and it’s not a compliance inspection. It’s about making things better - safer, smoother and more aligned. -
Give access to a cross-section of your people.
We want to speak to people at every level – from the senior team through to those making things happen day to day. Site managers, project leads, H&S reps… they’re often closest to how things really work on the ground. -
Make space for 1-to-1 conversations. (Not group sessions.)
People speak more freely when there’s no pressure to toe the line or having to watch what they say. -
Make time.
Make space in busy schedules so people don’t feel rushed or caught off-guard so we have the time to have a quality conversation. -
Set the tone from the top.
Make it known you want the truth and not a tidy version that papers over the cracks. There’s no point in doing this if things are covered up. -
Be honest about what’s not working.
If you already know there’s a weak spot, then say so. The more upfront you are, the more value you’ll get and the more useful and honest the outcome will be. -
Ask questions.
This is a highly collaborative process. Challenge the findings, share your thinking, because you’ll often spark deeper insights that way.
What NOT to do:
-
Don’t expect a sugar-coated version.
If you just want to hear you’re doing great, this isn’t the process for you. The whole point is to find the gaps so we can close them. -
Don’t start firefighting mid-way or try to sort things in advance.
Let the diagnostic run its course. You’ll get better, more strategic fixes if you let us step back first and see the full picture. -
Don’t treat this like a compliance check.
This isn’t filling in a template form. It’s about understanding your business, your people, and how things really work on the ground. -
Don’t filter who we speak to.
Leave no stone unturned! We need to hear from the site manager, the PM, the person doing inductions, the one who’s too busy doing the job to stop and chat – we need full access. -
Don’t downplay problems to look good.
Absolutely no judgement here. If you’re bringing Jack in, please don’t waste the chance by pretending everything’s peachy.
FAQs
One question you might have right away:
Q. Is this similar to a Gap Analysis?
If that’s what you’ve looking for, yes, that’s where it starts.
But it’s much more in depth than that. Rather than just working out what your current state is versus your desired future state, it offers a custom action plan that we actively help you put in place.
These are real solutions based on the investigations designed to help you improve. We’ll not just pass over a report and let you figure it out.
Browse our list of common questions:
I’m not sure how The H&S Diagnostic is different from a standard audit or gap analysis?
An audit/gap analysis usually checks whether you’re compliant. The H&S Diagnostic goes further as it it looks at whether your systems actually work.
We benchmark how your teams, systems, paperwork, and leadership behaviours perform in reality then compare that to where you want or need to be.
Who usually asks for this? What’s the typical trigger?
It’s nearly always leadership.
This service is for businesses that are growing fast, entering new markets, or spotting patterns that don’t sit right. This could friction on site, disconnects between design and delivery, or safety systems that don’t reflect how people actually work.
Occasionally we’ll suggest the H&S Diagnostic ourselves, if we spot patterns or trends that don’t have an easy fix – ones often grounded in culture.
The key theme? Leaders who want to improve and are honest enough to know they need a proper outside view to help get there.
We already pass audits, do we really need this?
Audits can show you’re compliant. But they rarely show you where risk is actually creeping in.
We’ve seen contractors with clean records still struggle with leadership gaps, subcontractor coordination issues, or systems no one follows because they weren’t built for real life.
The H&S Diagnostic picks up the stuff that falls between the cracks (or gaps!) That’s when small issues can turn into heavily entrenched systemic ones, so let’s not get to that point.
Is this going to just end in just a report?
No. This isn’t a “drop a PDF and run” service. (If that’s all you want, Jack’s probably not your guy.)
The document is often the start of a longer conversation or a strategic partnership that can evolve over time It might lead to leadership workshops, a restructuring of how you manage H&S, changes to roles, or new ways to brief subcontractors.
What types of issues do you tend to uncover?
Some common examples:
- Site safety management that looks good on paper but isn’t followed
- Design-phase risk not translating into site controls
- Confusion over PC/PD responsibilities and handovers
- Subcontractors doing their own thing without any oversight
- Managers avoiding certain conversations or decisions
- Leadership behaviours that contradict stated policies
- Culture drift: where what people say and do no longer align
Let’s remember it’s not about finding fault and apportioning blame. You’re doing this to reveal issues that are bubbling under and get tools to deal with them.
Is this just for Principal Contractors?
No, it’s for any business involved in construction that takes H&S seriously and wants to grow.
We’ve worked with main contractors, fit-out specialists, client-side developers, educational and cultural institutions managing complex refurbishments.
The common factor is a desire to improve, so this is the place to start.
Does it involve using Altitude?
Often, yes, especially for existing Havio clients.
Altitude gives us a data-backed view of inspections, risk trends, and gaps over time. But it’s not essential that you are an existing client.
The real value comes from the combination of data + insight + experience which is what turns information into action.
How long does it take?
It depends on the scope, but typically 2 – 4 weeks from first conversation to final delivery.
That includes site visits, interviews, paperwork review, and strategic recommendations in the report.
Spaces are genuinely limited for our H&S Diagnostic service
Jack’s been in this industry for over 20 years and runs his own company, so he knows where things get stuck, how culture can drift, and where the wheels often come off.
Because of the time and energy it takes, he commits to only about 6 of these a year. That’s a deliberate choice, making sure that they are performed well and go into the detail required.
Jack’s here to help you get to the truth of what’s holding your business back and what’s possible if you face it head on.
So if you want him involved, let’s start the conversation early.
