Health and Safety Policy
What is a Health and Safety Policy?
A Health and Safety Policy sets out your organisation’s general approach and commitment together with the arrangements your organisation has to manage Health and Safety. A Health and Safety Policy is a unique document that says who does what, when and how.
A Health and Safety Policy is required for any organisation employing five or more persons. We recommend the Health and Safety Policy is reviewed annually to ensure any legislation changes or company changes can be accounted for.
Why do I need a Health and Safety Policy?
- It helps to protect the wellbeing of staff, visitors, customers and anyone else affected by your organisation’s work.
- A health and safety policy helps lead to a safer working environment which, in turn, reduces the number of absences by staff.
- A safer, healthier and therefore happier workforce is more productive.
- Less absence + increased productivity = increased profits.
- You will enhance your reputation with customers and suppliers.
- Having a clearly set out Health and Safety Policy is good for your company’s corporate social responsibility.
- It provides a clear direction as to who does what, when and how within the organisation making it simpler for everyone to follow.
How can Havio help with writing a Health and Safety Policy?
- Havio will start by consulting with your organisation either face to face or via the telephone – we do this to better understand your business, your challenges and specific areas of risk.
- Our Health and Safety Policies are bespoke to your organisation. Our promise to you is that you will not receive endless reams of paperwork with arrangements which are not proportionate to your line of business.
Fire Risk Assessment
What is a Fire Risk Assessment?
An often-overlooked document for a construction project, a fire risk assessment is a legally required document which must be updated throughout the project. Havio act on behalf of the Responsible Person to ensure a risk assessment is completed and appropriate control measures are in place to minimise the risk to life and property from fire.
Every year there are many fires on construction sites and in buildings undergoing refurbishment; people are injured or killed, property is destroyed, including irreplaceable heritage buildings, and the industry suffers disruption and unexpected costs from which many never recover.
Why do I need a Fire Risk Assessment?
- You will be keeping your operatives on site, or those affected by your undertakings, safe from the risk of fire.
- A fire on a construction site can have a devastating effect in terms of business continuity and project viability – by taking simple, common sense steps you can ensure your business continues to thrive.
- As a Responsible Person under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 there is a legal requirement to have a Fire Risk Assessment – The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 also make clear the need for robust fire safety arrangements.
Why Choose Havio for your Fire Risk Assessment
- We are construction Health and Safety experts and have an in-depth knowledge of both HSG168 – Fire Safety in Construction and The Joint Code of Practice Fire Prevention on Construction Sites and Buildings undergoing renovations.
- Our team of experts who hold membership of The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) are fully qualified to provide the best support possible – by choosing Havio you can rest assured that the fire risk assessment completed will be fully encompassing. We are not a tick box consultancy.
- By choosing Havio we will ensure that we balance the control measures required with the business case of implementing such controls.
Traffic Management Plan
What is a Traffic Management Plan?
A Traffic Management Plan is a document which clearly details how your site is organised so that vehicles and pedestrians can move around safely on site. Our document includes both written controls and a schematic plan.
Why do I need a Traffic Management Plan?
- Put simply, Traffic and Pedestrian Management is the biggest cause of workplace fatalities and major injury within the construction sector. By having a robust plan to implement sensible controls, you will be reducing risks to those affected by your business so far as is reasonably practicable.
- A Traffic Management Plan leads to a safer working environment which, in turn, reduces the number of absences by staff.
- A safer, healthier and therefore happier workforce is more productive.
- Less absence + increased productivity = increased profits.
- By having a Traffic Management Plan, you will be complying with the law.
Why choose Havio for your Traffic Management Plan?
- We are competent to deliver traffic management plans. All our consultants are members of IOSH with many holding (or working towards) one of the highest grades, that being Chartered status and being on the OSHCR Register. Our team has a wide range of specialisms to ensure you can get the right advice when you need it.
- We are passionate about keeping things simple and controlling risks proportionately. We are all too aware of how over-controlling risk, whilst not negatively impacting safety standards, can affect both the bottom line and reduce the impact of the safety message.
- Havio employ high calibre consultants who have many years’ experience and training under their belts. As well as this, we believe that technical acumen is only one aspect of what makes a good Health and Safety Consultant. Excellent interpersonal skills is the other key component and, for this reason, prior to joining Havio, all consultants complete a psychometric test which allows us to judge whether they possess the right character traits to deliver Health and Safety in the Havio way.
- Havio are an accredited SSIP Worksafe Consultancy.
Risk Assessment and Method Statements
What are Risk Assessments and Method Statements?
Often referred to as RAMS, Risk Assessments and Method Statements are two separate documents which are quite often combined.
A Risk Assessment is the cornerstone of successful Health and Safety Management. A risk assessment looks at the significant hazards for the task/activity being assessed and determines control measures required to reduce the risk to acceptable levels.
A method statement, also known as a safe system of work outside of the construction industry, is a formal procedure following an evaluation of a high-risk task or activity.
What they are not
Havio is not an online provider of Risk Assessments and Method Statements and we don’t have any ambitions to be. All too regularly we are approached by clients who have produced documents from an online provider which turn out to be unsuitable for their business, usually due to one of the following reasons:
- They are too generic in nature and not specific to the task/activity in hand.
- They provide overboard control measures which clients cannot, and should not have to, achieve. Once they are on paper that is what you are committing to in the eyes of the law.
Why do I need Risk Assessments and Method Statements?
- They help to protect the wellbeing of your staff and anyone else affected by your organisation’s work.
- A good set of Risk Assessments and Method Statements leads to a safer working environment which, in turn, reduces the number of absences by staff.
- A safer, healthier and therefore happier workforce is more productive.
- Less absence + increased productivity = increased profits.
- You will enhance your reputation with customers and suppliers.
- By having a Risk Assessments and Method Statements for the works at hand, you will be complying with the law.
Why Choose Havio for your Risk Assessment?
- We provide excellent value for money – we can design bespoke risk assessment and method statement templates which you can tailor per project – saving you time and money.
- We are competent to deliver risk assessments and method statements to a wide range of clients within the construction sector. All our consultants are members of IOSH with many holding (or working towards) one of the highest grades, that being Chartered status and being on the OSHCR Register. Our team has a wide range of specialisms to ensure you can get the right advice when you need it, e.g. Membership of The Association of Project Safety (APS), British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), etc.
Excellent interpersonal skills is the other key component and, for this reason, prior to joining Havio, all consultants complete a psychometric test which allows us to judge whether they possess the right character traits to deliver Health and Safety the Havio way.
- Havio is an accredited SSIP Worksafe Consultancy.
Health and Safety Training
What is Health and Safety Training?
Health and Safety Training is about helping people to learn how to do something. The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 requires that employers provide adequate training to staff to ensure Health and Safety procedures are understood. It also states the need to provide adequate information, instruction and training.
Why Health and Safety Training matters
Accidents and ill health associated with work lead not just to needless pain and suffering but to huge costs and loss of business continuity. 147 people were fatally injured in work-related accidents the UK in 2018/2019, over 555,000 injuries were reported, and 1.4 million people suffered from a work-related illness leading to 30.7 million lost working days.
Ensuring safe and healthy working has to be a key priority for everyone at work and this requires real competence, not just commitment and good intentions.
Why do I need to invest in Health and Safety Training?
- Health and Safety Training helps your employees to identify hazards and adopt safe and healthy working practices.

Health and Safety Audits
What is a Health and Safety Audit?
A Health and Safety Audit provides a systematic review of your organisation’s current level of management measured against your existing management system and existing legislation. A Health and Safety Audit will provide you with a clear indication of where you are in terms of compliance and where best to focus your attention and company resources.
Health and Safety Audits serve two broad purposes:
- They are routinely conducted in order to determine whether the company is in compliance with Health and Safety legislation. These can be performed by representatives of a regulatory body or by the company itself.
- They are used to identify weaknesses in the company’s safety programmes and processes. These audits are then used as a guide for designing safety plans or to identify corrective actions that should be undertaken.
Why do I need a Health and Safety Audit?
- A Health and Safety Audit will help to protect the wellbeing of staff, visitors, customers and anyone else affected by your organisation’s work.
- A health and Safety Audit helps lead to a safer working environment which, in turn, reduces the number of absences by staff.
- A safer, healthier and therefore happier workforce is more productive.
- Less absence + increased productivity = increased profits.
- Our Health and Safety Audit will provide you with an overview of compliance – where are you performing well? and what needs to be improved?
- A Health and Safety Audit will save you money by directing resources to those issues which are real rather than perceived.
- Our Health and Safety Audit will help enhance your company’s credentials by having a system in place for independently monitoring and reviewing performance.
- By completing a Health and Safety Audit you will enhance your reputation with customers and suppliers.
- A Health and Safety Audit will help increase employee awareness.
Why Choose Havio to complete a Health and Safety Audit?
- We take the time to get to know your business and will conduct a number of interviews with key stakeholders – we want to complete a deep dive within the business, not operate from behind a desk!
- Our expert team, with various specialisms, will feed into different areas of the safety audit providing you comfort in knowing the audit has been completed by leading experts in their field.
- We take the time to present back the Health and Safety Audit to key stakeholders – this means the audit is brought to life rather than expecting our clients to pore over the detail.
- We are a market leading Health and Safety Consultancy and are good at what we do. We are trusted by hundreds of clients for their Health and Safety Auditing requirements.
- We can support you in any follow-on areas which may come out of the Health and Safety Audit.
Health and Safety Inspections
What is a Construction Site Health and Safety Inspection?
A Health and Safety Inspection is a way of performing a thorough check on a construction site to help identify and control potential hazards and ensure all operatives on site, and others affected by construction activities, are not put at risk.
Health and Safety Inspections provide a snapshot of compliance at a moment in time; they are not to be confused with a Health and Safety Audit.
How will Health and Safety Inspection services from Havio help your business?
- Our Health and Safety Inspections will provide an identification of hazards and provide pragmatic solutions on how best to rectify any issues.
- We see a Health and Safety Inspection as an opportunity to provide coaching to our clients and the workforce. We believe that our visits should focus on both positive aspects of performance and, of course, any aspects which require attention. We are viewed by our clients as a partner who works closely with you to achieve excellence in a fast paced, commercially driven world.
- A Health and Safety Inspection will help to ensure you comply with the law.
Why Choose Havio to help with carrying out a Health and Safety Inspection?

- Havio constantly strives to make Health and Safety compliance simple and something which makes sense for both the operatives and the larger business.
- Havio employs high calibre consultants who have many years’ experience and training under their belts. As well as this, we believe that technical acumen is only one aspect of what makes a good Health and Safety Consultant. Excellent interpersonal skills is the other key component and, for this reason, prior to joining Havio, all consultants complete a psychometric test which allows us to judge whether they possess the right character traits to deliver Health and Safety the Havio way.
- Havio has developed a smart health and safety dashboard that provides high level trend analysis of performance on sites and workplaces following site inspections. Having this data driving safety performance allows our clients to target specific activities in reducing risk and deliver cost effective improvement plans.

What is Competent Health and Safety Advice?
A Competent Source for Health and Safety Advice is either an individual who has sufficient skills, knowledge and experience, or a company who can provide this service.
If you need to engage outside help, you must remember that you cannot devolve the management of health and safety risks to others. However, specialist/consultant help can be used to contribute to your overall health and safety management.
